Sports club could benefit from proposed development at Penwortham Mills

Bovis Homes has begun discussions with South Ribble Borough Council about proposals for redevelopment of the former Penwortham Mills site, three miles to the south of Preston city centre.

Proposals are for a mixed-used development including new homes, public open space and new community facilities on the 23 hectare site. A major benefit of the redevelopment (should approval be gained) would be that Vernon Carus Sports Club would gain security of tenure on its grounds, opening the door to potential funding from sports bodies and the national lottery needed to update the club’s facilities.

The site currently consists of the former Vernon Carus factory buildings, some existing houses, a reservoir, pasture land, sports fields and associated club buildings.

David Shard, Regional Managing Director of Bovis Homes, comments: “We want to breathe new life into this disused factory site and provide a wide range of both housing and employment opportunities to help meet the needs of the local community.

“In addition, we want to retain the significant recreation area around the reservoir and help secure the future of the existing sports club, which has huge potential to become a fantastic community hub.

“On-site tenants have been informed of our initial proposals and we are planning a public consultation to take place early in the New Year when local people will have the opportunity to give us their feedback. We hope this will enable us to submit a planning application for a development that will deliver what local people need in terms of new homes, leisure and community facilities.”

Details of the public consultation will be made available later this month.
